Training Like an Athlete – Even Without a Finish Line
This week’s focus has been on two key themes that go hand in hand: moving well and training with intent.
On Monday, I broke down one of the most overlooked but critical HYROX stations, the sled pull. If you watched the reel, you’ll know it’s not just about brute force. The most common mistake I see? People yanking the rope with their arms, losing balance, and wasting energy. It becomes chaos, not power.
But when done properly, it’s a rhythm: lean back to create tension, brace through your trunk, drive through your hips and legs, and finish the pull with your arms. Then reset and repeat. It’s a full-body movement, not an arm workout. And it’s one of the best examples of moving efficiently under fatigue. That’s the skill athletes train for, and that’s something we can all learn from.
That brings me onto Wednesday’s carousel, which looked at the idea of training like an athlete, even if you’re not one.
Because here’s the thing: the people who get the best results, whether they’re training for sport, health, fat loss or energy, all have one thing in common. They train with purpose.
Athletes don’t just turn up and hope for the best. They warm up properly. They know when to push and when to hold back. They recover as hard as they train. And they stay consistent.
Most importantly, they don’t chase random goals every few weeks. They focus on the process, and they stick to it.
So, what happens when you start thinking the same way?
You stop jumping between plans.
You start lifting properly, not just sweating for the sake of it.
You recover faster, perform better, and reduce injuries.
You actually feel like you’re making progress, instead of spinning your wheels.
You don’t need to be training for a world championship to benefit from this approach. Whether your goal is to get stronger, run faster, improve energy, or simply feel better in yourself – adopting an athlete’s mindset can change the game.
On a personal note… I need a new challenge.
After the high of completing the Madrid Marathon, I’ve definitely felt the shift. I went from structured training, clear targets, and regular feedback, to suddenly not having a date in the diary.
And if I’m honest, I’m someone who needs that structure. I’ve always trained better when I’ve got something to chase.
So I’ve started looking. A Beast Spartan Race? Maybe an ultra marathon? Something that gets me excited and a bit uncomfortable again. I don’t need the medal, I need the purpose.
Because when you’ve got a goal, everything lines up. Training makes sense. Your habits improve. You stop going through the motions and start showing up properly again.
So… what are you training for right now?
If you don’t have a clear answer, that’s your sign. Take a moment, pick a goal, and build your plan.
And if you need support, structure, or just some accountability, come and join the BCPerformance Community. It’s completely free. You’ll get a gym-based training programme, regular check-ins, and a group of like-minded people who are all working towards their own version of better.
You don’t need to do it alone.
But you do need to start.
Let’s get back to training like athletes – together.
Catch you next week,
